The Daily Dog: Korean Jindo

The Daily Dog: Korean Jindo

The Korean Jindo is an indigenous dog native to the island of Jindo in South Korea. Formerly known as the Chindo Dog, it is one of South Korea’s national treasures. Originally used for their keen sense of smell for tracking and hunting purposes, the Korean Jindo is a very intelligent and active breed that requires frequent human and dog interaction, or they can become overly independent, leading to overdominant behaviors and controlling personalities.

  • Originally bred for tracking and hunting on Jindo Island, including but not limited to game such as water deer and wild boar. In modern day they are found as human companions and guard dogs.
  • The Korean Army uses them as guard dogs on their bases due to their instinctively wary nature of strangers.
  • Jindo dogs understand pack hierarchy; even in their human homes, they will take the highest spot if not led by a strong-willed person who understands what dog hierarchy is.
  • Jindo dogs are an active breed that does well in active homes with experienced dog owners.

The Korean Jindo dog is a loyal and intelligent breed known for its strong hunting instincts and devotion to its pack unit. Jindo’s are a highly alert and naturally protective breed that requires consistent training and early continued socialization for its lifetime. Due to their strong-willed temperament, they require experienced, knowledgeable owners who are active and can provide them mental and physical stimulation. If you’re welcoming a Jindo into your home or want to bring out the best in your current dog, professional training can make all the difference.
